"Cast Among The Waves" (2022)

This is a selection of haiku written for a game project. They are from the perspective of a sailor of fortune.

Hundred planks of wood
The pine tree grows unaware
Of its destiny


Every journey
Is only able to start
At the beginning


Sails pregnant with wind
Water breaks along the bow
Birth of adventure


A single journey
Consists of one hundred tasks,
One thousand trials


I hear the gulls call
And the churning of the wash
And the sound of peace


I sing to the sea
And the sea sings back to me
Voiceless lullabies


Is there anything
That's worth as much in this world
As a man's freedom


If your wit is sharp
Do not sharpen the tongue but
Not sharpen the blade


The endless blue spans
Out on all sides with no change
Like the desert dunes


The crew bear the weight
Of the chores but captain bears
The weight of the crew


The cards are shuffled
Only Fortune knows wherein
Fortunes will be found


The sea does not know
Who drifts on her rolling dress
All are welcome here


The sun sets once more
Casts the sea awash in gold
And dreams of fortune


My only hope is
To leave what others may find
To be a treasure
