Sack Of Bricks

We carry all our bricks around
And brick by brick we lay them down
The cobbles of a road that winds
To take us where we'd like to find

It's not their weight that holds us back
But waiting for a paved track
To be laid out by other hands
That do not answer our demands

And when we reach our spot to pick
We take a load off brick by brick
Foundation and a cornerstone
Of someplace we can make our own

We daily work to stack the walls
And race with time to build it tall
To see what stories it will hold
And rest on them when we grow old

And when we have our final sleep
Then brick by brick they'll lay us deep
A brick to mark our plot of earth
Where others pass and judge our worth

But seldom heed the winding road
Or take account how large the load
We had to bear along the way
Or how we toiled day by day
